What is the use for a velocity selector when applied to magnetic and electrical fields? I understand that it is used to cause the magnetic and electric forces to cancel one another, but what is the practical use for this? Is anyone using one?

Scientists have recently discovered that polar bears likely split from the brown bear species approximately 110,000-130,000 years ago. This was at a time when the bear needed to evolve to survive the earth's quickly dropping temperatures. Because of this fact, it is now thought that the bear will start to evolve again to accommodate for the melting of the ice caps. Will it turn back into a sort of brown bear or will it turn into something else entirely?

NASA is saying that Chile's earthquake actually shifted the earth's axis by about 8 cm. What kind of problems could this cause for earth? Has this happened before?

Do anti depressants work or don't they? Why? There are many opinions out there but I want to hear yours.

A commonly used weed killer, altrazine, has just been found to actually turn some male frogs into female frogs. It actually has the ability to change genetically male frogs into females that are able to successfully mate. What kind of consequences will this have on our planet? Has anyone heard of anything similar to this from any other chemical?

Scientists have recently discovered movement-generating brain waves the occur outside the head. This could have limitless possibilities in the development of prosthetics! Patients suffering from stroke or spinal cord injuries could really benefit. Are there any other uses for these brain waves? What are these brain waves generally used for in a healthy human?

Sun seismologists have recently discovered a new technique for predicting solar outbursts. They study the flow of the sun's plasma which helps them decipher when these outbursts may occur. Some parties, particularly airlines and the military, would like exact predictions as to when the outbursts are scheduled to happen. Anyone know when we'll be able to predict such things with that much accuracy?

I realize that the earth's magnetic fields flip about every million years. I have read that the fields are due to flip "soon". But "soon" is in geological time; does anyone think that they'll flip during our lifetime?

The sun's magnetic field flips every 11 years. It was due to flip 6 months ago, but hasn't yet. The last time this happened it caused a "mini ice age" during which time it snowed in Chicago on the 4th of July. What do you think will be (or have been) the repercussions of the sun's magnetic field not flipping? Do you think it eventually will flip?

A consulting firm in Illinois came up with the cool new Mars Exploration Rover, which won the "Good Design Award" from The Chicago Athenaeum Museum of Architecture and Design last month. The Rover was designed based on agricultural principles with rugged tires and basic farming technology that has been around on earth for decades. Kudos to Montgomery Design International!

What are everyone's thoughts on the tiny T-Rex discovery in China? It has the same bone structure as it's larger counterpart, which leads me to wonder if it was simply a mutation?

I have heard buzzwords about a new cloth that has been developed (but is still in the testing process) that contains inorganic properties that are supposed to replicate those of human neurons. The intended use is mainly for those with handicaps, though I understand that the military is testing the material as well. Does anyone know anything about this?
